I'm not sure what sort of gags you have, but I wouldn't have one that completely covers your mouth. If you have one, a ring gag is good, or a bit gag, anything that will still allow you to breath if your nose gets stuffed up mid-session. I've been able to breath around my ball-gag, but a whiffle ball-gag would be better. Even a simple cleave gag would be reasonably safe.

I have not done this for years, but I have managed to bind myself very efficiently in this position before. I went to the length of drilling holes in the back of my headboard, after the holes were in place I set up a restraint system using clean socks, straps & ice cubes.

How it works:
Place one ice cube into a sock and let it slide down all the way.
Thread a ring down the sock until it hits the ice cube and won't slide down further.
(the ice cube must be larger then the ring you use)
Thread a decent, thin strap through the ring that is above the ice cube.
Finally, draw the top of the sock through the back of the headboard and tie a not so it can not be pulled through again.
You should now be able to place your wrist in the strap and tighten the strap the rest of the way with your teeth. You will be released when the ice cube melts to the point where it is small enough to pull through the ring.

Do this to each wrist after you secure your ankles and then you should be good.

I very highly suggest that if you are going to try this, do not restrain yourself the first time.
Set up everything as you normally would and just wait to see if you can eventually pull the ring through the sock, then you can rest assure your method is safe and you have done it correctly.

For use in the spread eagle on the bed, I attach my rope ratchets as close to the floor as possible so that they are well out of the way of my hands. I am able to pull on the loose end of the rope to tighten my bonds, which the rope ratchet then prevents from loosening. (Once they're tight they stay that way). Being near the floor, there is no way that I can get to the release button. The end of each of the ropes that bind me is bradded with a loop splice to a small metal ring winch is subsequently padlocked to wrist cuffs. these locks become my release method. Both keyed and combination locks work well, just be sure to leave enough slack so that your fingers can just barely get to the lock to open it when the time comes.
