Hip replacement and bondage.

Hallo.
I have developed pain in my right hip which a doctor says is arthritis (I am 64), and it has been suggested a hip replacement may be required or desirable at some point, although other options have not so far been really thoroughly investigated.
Those who remember me posting more frequently in earlier years will remember that my main self-bondage interest is locking myself in small containers like lockers, suitcases, bags, and so on. However, pain has led to me doing this less recently with containers where I am curled up in a tight foetal position, and I am really missing it. I do quite often now lie straight in locked surfboard bags (even sleep in them), however, which is not a problem - but I would prefer if I didn't have to be limited only to this - as in many things, variety is greatly valued.
Does anyone have enough medical knowledge of joint replacements to know how much this affects bondage activities, especially of the type I mentioned above? I suppose a doctor would know, but it is not something I feel easy about asking doctors.
I have heard conflicting information about joint replacements and how they affect your life generally. Some have suggested that, although it does effectively deal with pain and restores some movement, you usually don't return to full movement like before, and have to take care not to strain the joints in a way you didn't have to with the natural ones. But others have suggested there is no real limitation on the movements you can make, and you can effectively live normally, just like before the whole problem arose.
If I have the replacement done, is it likely to permanently rule out some kinds of bondage, such as the ones with suitcases and lockers as mentioned above? If I would like to keep doing this, should I try as hard as possible to avoid the replacement and try to find other treatments that will allow enough movement and reduce pain enough to enable me to continue? Other possible treatments I've heard help in some cases are the right kind of exercise, diet, weight loss, drug treatment, physiotherapy, Pilates, yoga. And I suppose I could improve my general fitness, too, which I think has declined recently, partly because of pain in walking longer distances.
Does anyone here have experience of this?
Is it possible that years of curling up in tight containers may in fact be the ultimate cause of the problem?
If anyone knows about these matters, I would appreciate their thoughts on it.
Thank you.
Regards, Michael.
