RE: Forum Communities.

Unread post by Gospodin »

This is just a few notes from my time flitting from community to community. I should point out that I got started in the early 1990s with alt.sex.stories. I remember that the first story I read was "Controlling Jennifer", which was a mind-control story. This was followed by a rather extreme kidnap story with some heavy bondage and torture.

I also moved on to alt.sex.stories.bondage and remember seeing someone complain about gay stories or something. The retort that came back was "Why don't we make an alt.sex.stories.bondage.whiningly.hetero.male?"

Those were gigantic discussion forums, with a massive amount of activity. There were people who managed them, but it was pretty anarchic. The way you read usenet tends to be like working an enormous party held in an old warehouse. You wander from group to group eavesdropping until you find something that interests you, and then you try to join that thread for a while and move on. There was room for everyone, but that meant room for a lot of real jerks.

The one thing that people got really tired of was the "YKINOK" effect. That stands for "Your Kink Is Not OK", and is the result of gay people accusing S&M people of being abusive, S&M people shouting at TS/TG folks, TS/TGs hurling epithets at scat people, and of course everyone seemed to have a beef with the furries.

So people got good at figuring out when a thread was headed into YKINOK territory, and just dissolving.

It took a long while for web forums to pick up the slack that usenet had dropped in the late 1990s. It seemed to me that for a while all the kinks had squirreled away into pay sites or whatever. Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places, but I got the feeling that there were plenty of people willing to sell to me, but not many discussion areas.

So many forums are pretty dedicated and limited. For example, you have the Staylace forums. They're all corsets, all the time.

When I followed the IAR, Ataraxia was the reigning personality there. He was big into full enclosure and discipline play. You could see that it shaped his view of rubber fetishism, because you would see moments where people had to explain to him that they were into latex for glamour or bondage (for example) without the heavy roleplay.

Ataraxia seems to have also been through a lot of personal struggle with his fetish, as he likes to repeat his motto of "You are not alone!" That always struck me as funny, because after an hour on the net you'd have a hard time convincing anyone nowadays that there isn't a community for every imaginable fetish. Still, it's a good sentiment and an important part of the group he runs.

I noticed an interesting dynamic when I used to read Bianca Beauchamp's forums. There are a few posters on her boards who take great pride in being older generation rubber fetishists. They seem to have been classic fetishists in the sense that they transferred all their sexual impulse away from the human body and over to rubber.

The problem with this is that one of them still holds this as a certain purity of spirit, and makes jabs at certain latex models for making "porn". The fact that one model had her nipples visible in one image started a long "I was cutting up raincoats before you were born!" rant that seemed to roll a lot of eyes.

One thing that I have noticed is that a lot of the communities that I follow nowadays have a large number of TV members. I always remember the person who joked about alt.sex.stories.bondage.whiningly.hetero.male and so I usually just say "good for them!" and scroll past stuff that doesn't interest me. But I find it interesting that the sort of things I'm into (women in maid uniforms, for example) tends to be aimed a lot at TVs. They all seem to have the best dresses!

Finally, I've stuck with this place for so long largely because it's a potpourri with a number of things that really appeal to me. The selfbondage stuff has some appeal from a technical standpoint (and I do love some of the sbf stories!) and the rubber and bondage elements keep me coming back. I'm sure there are people here who will say "I usually scroll past all the latex stuff, but the sbm and mummification keeps me coming back!" And that's really a sign of how healthy this community is.

Also commendable is how the community survived so many forum migrations, site outages, and other hiccups. We really dig the place, and stick around!

So keep up the good work, Gromet. You've got the party going here, so I'll just work the room and eavesdrop on some more conversations!

Well, it's great to hear from someone who's been to a lot of forums that this forum seems to be doing very well. I admit, this is one of the most polite, most well organized and all around pleasant forums i've ever been to.  I can't recall any flame wars, any trolls, or any other irritating nusances.  The best one that I can recall was a guy on the last forum who tried to create a huge uproar that his story was basically copied by another guy.  We agreed with him, but he kept trying to drag it out, and eventually he was banned.I certianlly hope this community keeps going for years to come!  Who knows, it might still be around when we are all old geezers reminicing about the old days!

I must say, I'm glad to find such a forum that I can really open up too.  I have been hidding my bondage life for most of my well...life.  To be able to share my fetishes with others is great, I feel a weight being lefted off my spirit.  The latex, rubber, and the mummification is GREAT!...but what I like most is that you can share your others fetishes w/ out regret.  To me you may find something you may want to try?

Haha, don't tell me you were on the newsgroups in the 1980s! I think I discovered the newsgroups around 1992 or so, so it's been about 14 years now for me. Before that it was just vague feelings and an unhealthy obsession with Emma Peel.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention was that the big story event that defined my kinky awakening was "Hired Help" by The Dark One. I used to read the groups on a big shared Unix server by cd'ing into the news spool and grepping and more-ing the actual news files.

The reason I did this was so that other users wouldn't see me running "trn --group=alt.sex.stories.particularly.depraved.and.perverted" .

I actually met the author of that series on IRC a while back. I thanked him for hitting me with a story that pressed pretty much all my buttons at a time when I was still rather impressionable.

Gospodin, there is no such thing as an UNHEALTHY obsession with EmmaPeel.  If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here.  There wasone episode that was banned in the US (I remember seeing "part" of iton TV) that is avail in VHS (probably DVD too) where Dianna Riggdesigned the S/M outfit she wore for the scene... and this was back inthe 60's.  Found the VC @ my local library...TB

Was that the episode where she wore a spiked collar?   And yes, if it wasn't for Emma Peel, I might not be here as well. "The Bird Who Knew too Much" was the one that got to me!

Looks like I've been 'pipped at the post!' I was just about to start a post along similar lines, only without the history of newsgroups. I've been having a damn good time since I joined Grommys forum. I've met some really nice people, had some great chats, & have probably 'come out' a bit more. Also some great links, & even started posting stories! A lot has gone from the Internet, particularly in the last couple of years- Check out my post on Aurelie's site if you haven't seen it. Talon used to have a lot of excellent pics for free- I think it's just a paysite now. A lot of forums, regardless of topic seem to be full of people bitching about each other- the old 'you can't see me, so I can say whatever I like'. As for the chat rooms- well, what can you say! (a waste of space?) The other thing that shits me, as I just finished saying to someone, is the way that some guys 'jump on' women in forums. No wonder so many women don't use the feminine form when they come up with a username. That doesn't seem anywhere near as evident on this forum. I've been at tech forums & a female asks a technical question & some dipstick says 'Hey wanna .....' and nothing else. She could be 15 years old, or younger for God's sake! I'm continually at loggerheads with other guys who don't show respect for women. A lot of the kinks displayed on this forum don't appeal to me personally(!) but hell, if people want to....um whatever , well good for them, just don't knock mine.Yeah I love this place- power to Gromet & Gagged Utopia, may they live forever. We can also give ourselves a pat on the back for being so polite, respectful & open minded. As for 'old geezers reminiscing about the old days' DR- come here & I'll wallop you with my walking stick! Now, let's see if I can find-alt.sex.stories.bondage.whiningly.hetero.male! tojo

The avengers episode in question is "The Hellfire Club", and it was a memorable moment that my own dear father described to me as something to behold as I watched the episode.

Peel has supposedly been drugged and brought out in the character of "Lady Sin" to participate in the club's bacchanale (whose sole purpose is to distract attention from a sinister operation of another sort!). She arrives complete with spiked collar, whip, and lace-up knee-high stiletto boots.

Now I'm more of a bubble-toe go-go boot sort of guy (and give me buckles and stretchy shiny stuff over laced any day) but the ensemble was memorable and made quite the impression.

that show always knew it was kinky. It knew it was doing a deliberately sexy version of the DiD scene whenever it tied Emma Peel down on the railroad tracks. Its sole purpose was probably to produce this community of kinks!

A toast!

Wow, I can see why this episode would be banned in the US back in 66, that's quite the outfit she's wearing. The Avengers was before my time, I'm going to have to see if it's on one of my 'retro TV' chanels on my satelite package, and hope that the CRTC has lightened up in here. Well, if they allow Desperate Housewives, I can't see The Avengers being a problem.

When the Avengers went into reruns that episode was shown. I 've seen it many times on television. The Avengers gave me my love of a women in a leather catsuit. I hated when she stopped wearing that leather catsuit.
